Embossing and Sponging technique
One of my favorite techniques is sponging and when paired with embossing, you can create stunning flowers! The new Blended Blooms stamp in from the new Stampin’ Up! catalog (starts June 1st!) and is designed to be used with the new Blendability Alcohol Markers but it still works beautifully with regular watercoloring and sponging.
- Stamps: Blended Blooms, Remembering Your Birthday, Summer Silhouettes
- Inks: Versamark, Pear Pizzazz, Early Espresso, Daffodil Delight, Pumpkin Pie, Melon Mambo
- Paper: Shimmery White
- Accessories: White Embossing Powder, Embossing Buddy, Paper Snips, Dimensionals, Bone Folder, Heat Tool, Stamping Sponges, Sponge Daubers
I randomly stamped the leaves from Summer Silhouettes in Pear Pizzazz on the Shimmer White cardstock (8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ scored at 4-1/4″). Try not to be too exact with the placement of the leaves to keep it from looking too planned 😉 When you’re embossing, be sure to use the Embossing Buddy on your fingertips and across the cardstock to minimize stray flecks. (Don’t look too close at the sample – I forgot to use the Embossing Buddy!). Embossing with White Powder on white cardstock can be tricky to see so make sure you’re near a window or other well-lit area. After melting the powder with the Heat Tool, tilt the embossed cardstock in the light to view it at different angles and make sure the powder is melted and shiny. If you over heat, the embossing will actually start to disappear.
Now for the fun part – sponging! I used a quarter of our Stamping Sponge and started in the center of the flower and sponged Daffodil Delight. You want to go in a soft circular motion and go out into the first layer of petals a bit. I then used the next color (either Pumpkin Pie or Melon Mambo) and continued sponging in a soft circular motion being sure to slightly overlap the Daffodil Delight that was sponged onto the first layer of petals. Because you’re going to trim the flowers later, you can go outside the lines too. I finished sponging the flower centers with Early Espresso using a Sponge Dauber to keep that color a little more contained.
You can use a tissue to buff off any excess ink and then trim around the edges with the Paper Snips. I like to leave a little border and don’t trim right next to the embossing. I slightly curled the edges with the Bone Folder and added to the card with Dimensionals. I stamped the greeting in Black Stazon before I added Early Espresso to the flower centers, but hey, close is good 😉
